Diaspora – An Open Source Social Network

There are many social networks that have popped up over the years. But unlike some popular social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut they are unable to provide much that would entice a user to switch. Diaspora, a widely anticipated social network site is now on the race. For the time being, it’s now in some of the early testing phases.

The main page offers a form in which you need to enter your email. Then you’ll get directly an invitation from the service. Once you’re logged in, you’ll get 5 invites of your own to share with friends.

In the next step, you need to set up your Aspects. Aspects lets you sort your contacts into isolated groups which can be read or posted to individually.

Now you can choose any other social sites to connect to your Diaspora. This means, when you post to your Diaspora node, those posts will automatically sent to Facebook, Twitter, and presumably other social sites in the future.

From your default homepage, you can read your most recent updates as well as post to your entire network.

Facebook’s horrendous track record regarding user privacy, is the biggest complaint from many Facebook users. Keeping an eye on this, Diaspora keeps the privacy by three ways, by aspects, by node isolation, and by the fact that no one “owns” or “controls” Diaspora as a whole. When the data is posted to one aspect it is not shared with another. Each node holds its own user data that is not propagated across the whole network.
