Google Fiber High-speed Internet Service will hit U.S. very soon

Fiber, Google’s ambitious high-speed Internet project is coming to one of more than 1,100 applying communities in early 2011. By the end of this year, the company was suppose to announce the lucky community. But it has been postponed due to the high impact of Fiber project. Google is currently working on a ultra high-speed broadband network of its own, but I’m not sure whether Google wants to have anything to do with the FCC’s National Broadband Plan.

Google Fiber was announced back in February. The project delivered broadband to between 50,000 and 500,000 users and had the search giant venturing into ISP terrirory. The speed was 100 times faster than typical Internet access. Google planned to create an at-scale testing ground for better, faster web apps. Now the number of applying communities is double and Google needs to choose the right environment for Google Fiber. The selection process is extended upto the beginning of next year, whereas the app process is closed.

The above map shows the communities that have applied. The small beige dot represents a government response while the large brown dot represents an area in which at least 1,000 people submitted a nomination. In this map you can find exactly where Google might build its own networks soon.

At Stanford University, Google Fiber has already been implemented in around 850 homes of staff and faculty. According to Google, this trial is showing broadband speeds of up to one gigabit per second. For it’s not a good news for international fans as Google won’t be able to extend its broadband plan outside the U.S. at least for now.
