MTV Unveils its New Music Meter Service
MTV launched into the music discovery space by rolling out its new web service, Music Meter. Digital operator at MTV Networks, Dermot McCormack said, MTV Music Meter is a service that scans social networks for bands generating an increasing number of comments, is available now. “We want to re-associate and new-associate the MTV brand with music”, he added. It’s a Christmas gift from MTV for all music lovers, that gives them news and info about up-and-coming acts. It means not only Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga but also those artists who are already excluded from the site.
EchoNest, music intelligence company worked with MTV for developing an algorithm that combs through blogs, social media, video and more traditional metrics. So that it can determine which bands are receiving the most attention on any given day. Fans can listen to their favorite bands, watch music videos, see photos, read tweets about that artist as well as news, bios, and more. For the time being, you can listen to 30-second clips. But MTV adds more sources for tracks, so that you can listen to full songs in future.
You can search for any artist, even those who aren’t that famous and delve into news, music and check out artists of the same ilk. Shannon Connolly, VP of digital music strategy says, “One of the ways MTV has helped people find great music is through curation”. “The network can help people get access to more bands easily, especially bands who might not be able to get on-air play in traditional settings”, she added.
