Registry Tweak to Change Default Location of Temp Folder in Windows 8

Temp or Temporary files and folders are created when by Windows by default when you install program or drivers or when a data is saved temporarily on the system while a task is performed. These temp files are stored in the TEMP and TMP in C: Drive. But once the task is completed the temp files are useless and gets deleted afterwards. This is not the case for all the temp files created on the system which eat up disk space unnecessarily. Here is the tutorial how you can change the default location of temp folders to avail disk space if you are running short.

If you have small shortage of disk space in Windows, here is the tutorial how you can change the default location of temporary folders in Windows 8.

Windows temp files are stored in the single hidden folder given below by default.

%systemdrive%\Windows\Temp

In Windows, the user temp files are located at the location below and is hidden folder by default. Each user account has their respective separate TEMP folder.

%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp

We will be discussing about how to change the default location of temporary folders in Windows 8 using registry. So, make sure to create a restore point on the system.

Steps to Change Windows TEMP Folder Location in Registry Editor

  • Firstly create a new Temp folder in a separate Drive or where you want to have your temp folder
  • Open Run dialog box using Windows + R keys and type in regedit and hit Enter
  • Upon prompted by UAC, click on Yes
  • Now, to Change “User” TEMP Folder Location in your user account
  • In registry editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Environment

  • In the right pane of Environment, double click on TEMP
  • In the new window that pops out, type in the full path for the newly created temp folder in the value data field and hit OK

  • Or to Change “System” TEMP Folder Location, make sure you have Admin privileges to perform the steps
  • In the registry, navigate to the following HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment
  • In the right pane of Environment, double click on TEMP
  • In the new window that opens type in the full path for the newly created system temp folder and click OK.

Once you have completed the steps you can close Registry Editor and reboot the system to apply the changes. On system reboot you can see the new Temp folder in the new location and Windows will use the new temp folder now onwards.
