VoIP Industry and Social Media Trends in 2012



With the start of New Year, every person and organization makes new resolutions, commitments and makes plan of actions, with reference to a particular niche. When we say, social media trends; we basically refer to the social media marketing practices, which companies are going to adopt in the year 2012. VoIP industry, which has observed a significant growth over the years, will remain focus of this analysis, as my special area of interest lies in analysis of this industry.

Changing Trend

Moreover, if you look at major players in the industry, you will see a diverse range of activities and functional social media practices, for better customer relations. Take Skype, Axvoice or Vonage, and follow their pages on Twitter, Facebook etc. You will see a bundle of corporate wisdom and creativity, aimed at engaging customers. In the following lines, on the basis of my analysis, I am projecting some expected trends of social media in the New Year.

Integrated but Individual Management of Social Media:

This is something that is a ‘must to do’ thing for any business. My insight favors the prediction that social media managers will start making separate plans of action for every social media platform and will put in individual attention. In the past, even if you look at Skype, or other leading VoIP providers, you will see that more or less, same status was used for Facebook and Twitter. This year, I hope for it to change and it will bring positive results.

More Seriousness in Approach:

In the previous schemes, the status was restricted to just news announcements, packages and wishes. However, this year, I predict that social media will be gaining much more attention as compared to the past. This will involve interactive communication over various social media platforms.

Capitalizing Smartphone Advantage:


smartphone appsLast year, the mobile VoIP industry observed significant growth owing to the rapid development of VoIP compatible Smartphone apps. These apps enable the users to enjoy the services of Skype, Axvoice, Ooma or others, which they are subscribed to. So, capitalizing on Smart phones’ potential is very important because more people are using smart devices for social interaction. If the operators are able to make smart phone users understand the mechanism to control the cost with VoIP, it can do wonders.

Widening of Focus and Coverage:

More or less, companies use the traditional approach of using the social media for market capitalization; however, traditional approach does not work every time. With the New Year beginning, there are multiple opportunities for the companies to get the most out of available space in the market. Although, you see fan pages of Axvoice, Skype, and Comcast on twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc. But the approach of involving people has gone dead. Conversations with people have to be made interactive and lively, instead of simply news breaking. Moreover, Infographics, Flicker and other newly introduced applications need to be utilized effectively.

Unified Dashboards:

This debate has already started in the social media circles that there should be a unified dashboard to control various social media platforms. Currently, there are various social media management applications like Tweet Deck, but they are restricted to just one website or platform. It is need of the hour and demand of social media mangers to have a platform which enables them to manage various social networks from just one place.

Finally, whether you talk about the VoIP industry or any other corporate domain, you will see that with every passing year, there would be a visible change in the mindset of the customers as well as service providers. Everyone has started taking social media more seriously after recent Arab Spring and UK revolts. So, companies will have to modify their thinking and approach towards social media its effectiveness in managing public relations to achieve better results.
