Start screen the newly added feature in Windows 8 has been fascinating many users. The start screen allows users to customize its background and color as per your wish. But if you have many users for your Windows 8 PC then it can be quite annoying if the other user changes the start screen background that is annoying to you. Windows 8 Start screen flexibility to customize has been benefit to many users but still there are users who don’t fascinate these changes. Here is how you can prevent users from being able to change the Start screen background and color.

Before moving on the steps make sure that you are signed in as an administrator or with admin privileges.

You can Enable or Disable Changing the Start Screen Background using two procedures i.e. using a .reg file and local group policy

Enable/ Disable Changing Start Screen using .REG File

By default in Windows 8, changing of Start Screen Background and Color is enabled, but still if you want to enable it, you need to create a .reg file

  • Open notepad and cop paste the following entries

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization]
“NoChangingStartMenuBackground”=-

  • Now save the file with a name Enable Changing Start Screen Background with a .reg extension
  • If you want to disable Changing the Start Screen Background and Color, in notepad copy and paste the following entries

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization]
“NoChangingStartMenuBackground”=dword:00000001

  • Save the file with a name Disable Changing Start Screen Background with a .reg extension.
  • Next, double click on the saved .reg file to run and Merge it with registry.
  • Upon prompted by UAC, click on Run, Yes, Yes, and OK.

You can now try changing the background but it doesn’t allow you to do so.

Enable/ Disable Changing Start Screen using Local Group Policy Editor

  • Open Run dialog, type in gpedit.msc and hit Enter. This will open policy editor
  • Upon prompted by UAC, click Yes to continue with the process.
  • In the left pane, navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization

  • In the immediate right pane, you can see the option Prevent changing start menu background and double click on it
  • A new Window opens, If you want to Enable Changing the Start Screen Background and Color Select the radio button besides Disabled or Not Configured and click OK

  • Or to Disable Changing the Start Screen Background and Color, select Enabled option and hit OK

Once you completed all the steps you can now close the Local Group Policy Editor window.
You can try changing the background image or color of Windows 8 start screen; you will find that you are not allowed to do so or depend upon set preference.
